Dublin’s Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has been appointed to the Vatican’s new Secretariat for Communications.
The body, consisting of six cardinals, seven bishops and three laypersons and headed by Msgr Dario Vigano’, is responsible for, among other things, coordinating the work of the Vatican website, Vatican Television Centre, Vatican Radio, the Vatican newspaper and the Vatican press office. The need to streamline and coordinate the Vatican’s communications was identified as a priority by the Pope’s Council of Cardinal Advisors in 2013.
Dr Martin’s appointment to the secretariat will be an additional role, supplementing his duties are Archbishop of Dublin, and will entail several meetings in Rome each year.
The announcement falls just two days after the announcement of American Greg Burke as the new director of the Holy See Press Office.
