Kilmore diocesan Masses to commemorate 1916 Rising

The centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising will be marked at Masses in parishes throughout the Diocese of Kilmore over this weekend.

The liturgy will be a special liturgy of remembrance, reflection and prayer to mark the anniversary of the Rebellion which started 100 years ago on this weekend (April 24).

Two men who were natives of Kilmore diocese and executed in 1916, will be particularly remembered. Francis Sheehy Skeffington, a pacifist and a champion of women’s rights, was born in Bailieborough in 1878. He was not involved in the rebellion but was arrested on Easter Tuesday when trying to prevent looting in the city and later executed. Seán MacDiarmada was born in Kiltyclogher in 1883. He was a signatory to the Proclamation and was executed on May 12, 1916.

300 Kerry teens gather to celebrate faith

Over 300 young people from across the Diocese of Kerry came together this week to celebrate their faith life.

The annual Ceiliúradh na nÓg event, coordinated by the diocesan advisor in collaboration with schools, took place in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee yesterday (Wednesday) as the culmination of a faith-based programme to help senior secondary school students to develop their faith by choosing to either take part in a community outreach programme or partake in school centred projects.

The theme for the day was ‘Be Christ’s Joy’ and Dr Dan O’ Connell was guest speaker. Students presented a five minute presentation on their project, followed by an interview with Fiona Stack of Radio Kerry and presentation of certificates by Bishop Ray Browne.
