Moved by stories of crisis pregnancies

Dear Editor, David Quinn succinctly outlines the likely outcome of any change to the pro-life clause in our Constitution (IC 25/09/2014).

I cannot but be moved by the stories of women in traumatic circumstances, such as a mother with an unborn child with foetal abnormalities or a victim of rape or incest, and many Catholics I know are inclined to consider these grounds for abortion.

David Quinn is surely right in highlighting the many examples where women in such circumstances treasure the lives of such children, no matter how long or short. But if the moral value of protecting all life is to be achieved, particularly in terms of avoiding what a liberal abortion regime might bring to Ireland, then the real stories of all women who have been through difficult circumstances needs to be told, and those in the future who may experience traumatic circumstances must be offered the best care and support within the confines of the current legislation.

Yours etc.,

Frank Browne,

Templeogue,
