Trócaire has condemned the killing of Fr Youhanna Al-Amin PP of St Vincent’s Kauda Parish of Sudan’s Catholic Diocese of El Obeid, who was killed on Friday, June 19. A staff member of a Trócaire partner organisation was also killed during the attack, and another staff member is “seriously injured and is currently receiving medical treatment”.

“The killing of civilians, community leaders and humanitarian personnel is unacceptable,” the organisation said in a statement. “Humanitarian workers and local partners are at the forefront of the response to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises and must be able to carry out their work safely and without fear of violence.”

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) has heard “that the priest’s death appears to have been an act of retaliation after Fr Youhanna reported the theft of medicines that the Church was safeguarding for the benefit of the local population.”

Trócaire said they “are also deeply concerned by the looting of humanitarian supplies intended to support vulnerable communities, further undermining access to life-saving assistance for people already facing immense hardship.”
