A number of Irish dioceses are stepping up efforts to encourage vocations to the priesthood, with “Come and See” events taking place over the coming weeks and months, including gatherings in Knock on March 28, Thurles on April 11, and Galway on May 10.
The initiatives are part of a wider push to invite men to explore a possible call, with vocations directors pointing to the importance of both witness and encouragement.
In the dioceses of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora, vocations director Fr Ian O’Neill said it is important “to keep it on the agenda”, highlighting the role of regular prayer, parish discussion and visible witness. He noted that many are drawn to priesthood through the example of priests already living the vocation.
“It’s important… to keep it foremost,” he said, adding that those discerning should “make contact with somebody”, often a priest they already know and trust.
In Waterford and Lismore, vocations director Sr Kathryn Press emphasised that vocations are fostered within a community, not in isolation. “The local community… are the prayer warriors,” she said, but added that invitation is essential.
She noted that people often need to be invited more than once before seriously considering a vocation, stressing that encouragement from others plays a crucial role alongside prayer.
“The Lord is still calling people,” she said, “but we need to hear that invitation through others.”
She also pointed to “an openness, a hunger” among young people today, suggesting that while challenges remain, there are signs of renewed interest.
