The former Presentation Convent lands in Portlaoise have been officially reopened following a two-year redevelopment, delivering 52 social housing apartments for people on the long-term homeless waiting list in Co. Laois.
The site, originally established by the Presentation Sisters more than 200 years ago, had fallen into dereliction by the late 20th century. After the sisters were forced to leave in 1999 due to safety concerns, the buildings deteriorated and redevelopment plans repeatedly stalled.
A renewed effort began in 2024 through a partnership between Sophia Housing Association, Laois County Council and the Department of Housing. The project included both restored historic buildings and new apartments and was completed on schedule and under budget, a spokesperson for Sophia said.
Speaking at the official opening, Sr Frances Crowe, who had campaigned for the site’s use in social housing, said the development reflects a broader vision of care. “They don’t just provide a home… they give them to the people with the most complex needs in our society… to help them lead better and more holistic lives,” she said.
