O’Callaghan Excitement is growing across the Diocese of Cloyne ahead of its first priestly ordination in nine years, as Whitechurch native Rev. Tiernan Burke prepares to be ordained to the priesthood on the Feast of Pentecost.
The ordination will take place in St Colman’s Cathedral, Cobh, at 3pm on Sunday, May 24, marking a joyful moment for the parish communities which have supported the soon-to-be priest on his journey.
Speaking with The Irish Catholic, Rev. Burke described his vocation as one nurtured by family, parish life and a deep love of the Mass. “From a young age, priesthood was always at the back of the mind. I just loved the Mass and wanted to be there,” he said, recalling his years as an altar server in Whitechurch.
He said he had “a fierce sense of gratitude” to those who helped form him, adding that “it takes a village to raise a priest”. Having been supported by family, parish and the wider community throughout his formation, Rev. Burke said he is now looking forward to a ministry of service, “being able to celebrate the sacraments” and accompany people through the most important moments in their lives.
“I am very much looking forward to beginning this new life of service as a priest,” he said.
Masses of Thanksgiving and first blessings will follow his ordination, including a Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Carraig na bhFear, on Wednesday, May 27 at 7pm.
