The Diocese of Clogher has celebrated the ordination of Fr Stephen Sherry to the priesthood on Vocations Sunday, April 26, in St Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan.

Originally from Tullycorbet, Co. Monaghan, Fr Sherry was ordained by Bishop Lawrence Duffy in a ceremony attended by clergy, family and parishioners from across the diocese. His ordination marks the first in Clogher since 2019.

Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Fr Leo Creelman, diocesan vocations director, described the occasion as “a joyful and hopeful time” for the diocese. “There’s great excitement,” he said. “People feel he’s one of their own. They’ve walked with him on his journey, and now they see him become a priest.”

Fr Sherry had already served in parishes including Monaghan & Rackwallace and Roslea as a deacon, becoming a familiar presence among parishioners.

His involvement in the diocesan youth group Clogher don Óige, has also made him a visible witness to younger Catholics. “For many young people, the idea of priesthood wasn’t even on the horizon,” Fr Creelman said. “Now, seeing someone like Stephen, they begin to think about it. It raises awareness and gives hope.”

In the days leading up to the ordination, Holy Hours were held across the diocese, with strong attendance reflecting widespread support.

In a statement ahead of his ordination, Fr Sherry said he was “deeply grateful” for the encouragement he received throughout his journey, asking for continued prayers as he begins his priestly ministry.
