Building up your willpower to resist temptation

Everywhere you go there will be temptations to eat foods that aren’t all that good for you

Tesco announced recently that their stores around the country will no longer stock sweets and chocolates at checkouts.

The supermarket giants' decision was reportedly driven by customers who had made it clear 'that removing sweets and chocolates from checkouts will help them to make healthier choices'.

While this is an admirable initiative by the supermarket chain, it is a pity such a measure had to be taken in the first place. What makes it worse is that it was driven by the customer, who has made it clear they do not have the sufficient will power to reject sugary temptations and simply say ënoí.

Eating healthy is something that we all know is important to our well-being. However, instead of preparing healthy meals, we all too often opt for the 'easy' option.

If we indulged every once in a while it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but far too many people indulge in foods all the time and are paying for it in with declining health and weight gain.

Everywhere you go there will be temptations to eat foods that aren't all that good for you and it can be hard to resist every time.

Grabbing a bar of chocolate or packet of crisps every time you're at the checkout is definitely a habit to avoid getting into. Yet, countless people find this unavoidable on a daily basis.

Nourish

It is about time people begin to establish their power over food. You alone have the power to choose the foods that will nourish your own body, so start taking control of your choices.

One major problem that a lot of people have when it comes to eating healthy is that they say to themselves, 'one piece won't hurt' or 'I already messed up today so it doesn't matter'. These negative thoughts actually work against your goal to feed your body the food it needs to nourish and energise you.

So how to do build will power? Begin by using positive affirmations to stay focused on your goals.

Affirmations are statements of your ideal behaviour, feeling, response, and actions. You can use these health affirmations as a personal mantra to get you to where you want to be where your diet is concerned.

Your health affirmations could be something as simple as; 'eat well, feel well'.

You will be surprised how a simple, straight-forward statement like this can help give you the power to change your life by making the right dietary choices.

You can use your health affirmations as a sort of backup, so if your will power wanes, youíll still be able to make the right food choices.

Eating healthy can be a challenge, but overcoming challenges are character building and can be very rewarding when overcome. So next time youíre tempted at the check-out, remind yourself that youíre in control, and be brave enough to say 'no'.
