“When I found out I was pregnant, the road was just full of fog, and I couldn’t see clearly anymore.”
That’s how Amy describes discovering she was pregnant with her daughter, Amaya. Having experienced childhood trauma and foster care as a teenager, Amy knew what it felt like to have her voice taken away and to feel she had little control over her own life. Now, facing an unplanned pregnancy, she felt overwhelmed by advice that seemed to tell her what to do rather than help her find her own way forward.
Then Amy came to Zoe Community.
Support
For the first time in that difficult season, she felt heard. She was able to consider her situation and recognise that she could make a decision she believed she could follow through on. “My voice was heard, and my decision was important,” she recalls. “I felt validated.”
Women can find themselves caught between opposing voices, each convinced it knows what they should do”
Today, Amy looks at Amaya and describes her daughter as a miracle. She cannot imagine life without her.
This is why Zoe Community exists.
An unplanned pregnancy can bring fear, uncertainty and isolation. In a culture where conversations about pregnancy can quickly become polarised, women can find themselves caught between opposing voices, each convinced it knows what they should do. But behind every situation is a person with a story, a future and a need to be heard.
Motivation
Zoe Community is an Irish Christian charity working to equip communities across Ireland to support women experiencing unplanned pregnancy. Through our website, trained volunteers, community training and practical support, we want women to know they are not alone.
Jesus was generous with us, so we feel called to be generous with others”
We believe listening matters. Compassion must be more than good intentions. Supporting someone means walking alongside them, offering care and practical help without taking control of their story.
Our motivation is simple: Jesus was generous with us, so we feel called to be generous with others.
We have received grace, love and compassion from Jesus, and we want those gifts to shape how we treat people. We don’t believe anyone should have to earn kindness or have their life neatly sorted before they deserve to be heard.
Amy’s experience continued beyond her initial contact with Zoe. She later attended Unshamed, Zoe’s annual women’s conference, where hearing other women’s stories and seeing their strong foundations in God deeply moved her. She describes the experience as a turning point. Afterwards, she found herself reading her Bible more, journalling and growing in prayer.
