UN lacks fairness on abortion – PLC

The Pro Life Campaign (PLC) has accused the UN’s Human Rights Committee of totally ignoring the right to life of the unborn child.

The PLC was one of the official NGOs represented at a two-day hearing in Geneva where Ireland was criticised for not having more explicit access to abortion.

Barrister Lorcán Price, who represented the PLC in Geneva, said the manner in which “the committee totally ignored the right to life of the unborn child shows that they have a worryingly shallow understanding of human rights and no respect whatsoever for leaving it to the Irish people to decide on these matters”.

He said the questions from the committee “exclusively focussed on repealing any constitutional protection for unborn children”, and the committee gave a “false impression” that Ireland’s new abortion law is extremely restrictive.
