Overseas development charity Trócaire has announced a massive funding boost from the UK government which could see at least an extra stg£1.65 million for the organisation’s work in some of the world’s poorest countries.

As part of the ‘UK Aid Match’ initiative the Department for International Development has pledged to match public donations in Northern Ireland pound for pound to Trócaire’s Lenten campaign which launched February 4 and runs until Easter Sunday.

Speaking at the campaign launch Eithne McNulty, NI regional director for Trócaire, said: “We are absolutely delighted at this news. The Lenten campaign is our biggest fundraising and awareness-raising campaign of the year and this news makes the appeal this year even more important. We really need the public’s help to ensure we get this money.”
