Some horrid Halloween healthy treats

With a little imagination you can transform healthy food into wicked snacks.

The highlight of Halloween is the haul of goodies you gather when trick-or-treating. It’s very easy to neglect proper food on October 31 and instead to indulge on your stash of treats. With a little imagination you can transform healthy food into wicked snacks.

Devilled spider eggs & eye balls

Combine boiled eggs with some ketchup and olives and you can create spider eggs and eyeballs. Bring a pan of water to the boil, gently add four eggs and hard boil for 10 minutes. Drain the water from the pan and leave the eggs to cool. Once the eggs have cooled, peel off the shell and cut in half lengthways.

Scoop out the yolk and mix with mayonnaise, then spoon back into the egg whites. For the spider eggs, use two black olives per egg half. Leave one olive whole for the body and cut the remaining olive into four. Cut each quarter in half and stick these beside the whole olive for the spider’s legs. For the eyeballs, place a green or black olive in the centre of the yolk.

Spaghetti  brains

This is such fun to make and looks fantastic in the middle of the table. When ready to eat, place it in a bowl of warm tomato sauce and serve with the frankfurter fingers below. Cook the spaghetti and then drain it in a colander. Place inside a deep glass bowl, cool and then chill overnight or for a few hours. When you turn the spaghetti out onto a plate, it will hold its shape.

Frankfurter fingers

Cook the frankfurters as required and then cut each one in half. Use a knife to cut finger markings onto each sausage half. Push a flaked almond into the rounded end of the sausages for a fingernail. Serve in hot dog buns with ketchup or with the spaghetti brains above.

Horrid  apple bites

You can transform these apple bites with the type of nuts you use for the teeth. Use flaked almonds or pine nuts. Cut a red apple into wedges. Take a few nuts and push them into a wedge against the round side. Repeat with another wedge of apple and lay one wedge on top of the other.

Pull out a few of the nuts to create an even more horrid smile.

Orange pumpkins

November is a cold month so make sure you get your daily dose of vitamin C with these mandarin pumpkins. Simply peel the oranges and stick a tiny piece of celery stick into the top of each one for the pumpkin stalk.
