Missing the Point on Gibson

Dear Editor, Mr Terence Gallagher’s letter (IC 16/10/2014) is based on a complete misunderstanding of the basic premise of my column (Notebook, 18/09/2014) which had nothing at all to do with promoting a Mel Gibson movie, as he implies.

My central point is that many Catholics, even those who regularly attend Church, are now uncertain of fundamental aspects of the Faith such as the crucifixion of Jesus. The reference to Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ is incidental, not essential, to this argument. I would have thought that was obvious.

In addition, I maintain that statistics are of limited value in charting the religious landscape of Ireland today. Anecdotal observations, carefully reflected upon, frequently offer a rich understanding of our reality.

Finally, while one accepts the cut and thrust of vigorous debate and exchange, one is also entitled to object to unconstructive commentary, particularly when that is based on an erroneous interpretation of the author’s original work.

Yours etc.,

Andrew O’Connell,

Dun Laoghaire,

Co. Dublin.
