Kildare parish receives huge response to food appeal

Generous parishioners volunteer to help struggling families

A food bank operated by a Co. Kildare parish is handing out more than 100 food parcels a week to families struggling in the recession, thanks to the generosity of parishioners.

The ‘Share Food’ initiative was begun in Newbridge parish last February, when the pastoral council was looking at ways to meet the needs of the parish during the recession. It found inspiration in the work of Bro. Kevin Crowley in the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin.

“We called a meeting looking for volunteers and 50 people turned up, which was beyond our expectations,” said Sr Eileen Murphy.
