Holy See hosts young leaders of tomorrow

Irish delegate says seminar was “very valuable”

A Fianna Fáil councillor has described as “very valuable” a seminar hosted by the Holy See for European young leaders of tomorrow.

Malcom Byrne, a member of Gorey Town Council in Co. Wexford was one of 40 young leaders drawn from across the European Union to  participate in the annual ‘40 under 40’ dual seminars. Every year participants discuss the future vision of the European Union, with one meeting in Brussels and a second in another European city chosen annually. Rome was the destination on July 4, and the Holy See’s diplomatic corps the hosts.

“It was a valuable experience to meet with Vatican prelates and to learn more of the Holy See’s relationship with the EU,” Mr Byrne told The Irish Catholic.

Discussions

Explaining that discussions ranged across such topics as human values and rights, development issues and the values of the EU, Mr Byrne said he gained a clear sense of the Holy See’s support “for the concept of the European Union” and “the work of the diplomatic corps”.

On a personal level, and while admitting to some “disagreements” with some areas of the Church, Mr Byrne said that he was struck by “Pope Francis’ approach and his shining a light on issues of concern”.

“At a time in Europe when there is a lack of political leadership,” Mr Byrne said, “Pope Francis has shown leadership.”
