Building imagination with creative kids

Childhood is a time to let imagination grow and flow. Building interesting creations and getting involved in fun-filled activities is definitely one way of fostering this in kids.

ReCreate invites all the family to Corkagh Park in Clondalkin, Co. Dublin for an afternoon of making and creating on Saturday, June 15, from 12-5 pm.

To celebrate the national day of creativity and culture for children and young people, the ReCreate team will bring an array of creative activities to this green space.

Organisers say: “Be curious and inventive together with materials such as wool, plastics, fabric and foil and celebrate ReCreate’s first Family Fun Day for Cruinniú na nÓg 2019.”

Fostering creativity while being sustainability conscious, ReCreate’s vision is to enable all in society, especially children, the opportunities to experience the benefits of creativity in their daily lives.

They do this through a concept known as ‘Creative Reuse’ which is the repurposing of excess, unused or surplus materials in interesting ways.

This free event is supported by Creative Ireland – South Dublin.

Toddler trouble if screen time not limited ENOUGH

A study published by the US National Institute of Health that looked into pre-school children’s use of screens found several worrying results.

The study analysed parent-reported data about screen time and behavioural issues such as inattention and aggressiveness from a sample of 2,322 Canadian preschool-age children. Researchers found that over 13% of kids in the sample were exposed to over two hours of screen time each day including watching TV and DVDs, playing video games or using a computer, tablet or mobile device. The effects: Kids who were exposed to more screen time “showed significantly increased behaviour problems at five-years”, the authors write. Children who watched more than two hours of screen time per day had increased attention and behaviour issues as well as anxiety and depression.
