Coming up to your first Holy Communion usually you will receive your very first pair of rosary beads. While you may pick up more sets of rosary beads as you grow up, the ones you receive on your Communion day are beads that you will carry with you for life. Therefore it is important to have a special bag or box to store them in so that you don’t ever lose them.
Make this box ahead of the special day and you will look forward to receiving your rosary beads even more. If you’re not making your first Holy Communion this year then you can always give the box to a friend or sibling as a gift for their first Holy Communion and then make your own when your time comes.
For the box you will need one small round or square tin or a wooden or plastic box, craft card in gold or silver, cream and white, scissors and glue.
First make the template for the Communion chalice. Draw the outline of a cup or a chalice on some card and cut it out. Trace around this on the gold or silver card. Cut this out and set aside.
For the Communion wafer, use the template for the chalice as a guide for creating the right size. Cut this out from the cream card and set aside.
Chalice
Trace around the lid on some plain card and cut out. Stick this over the lid and then glue the gold or silver chalice on top. Next, glue the communion wafer just above the chalice.
Write your favourite prayer in your best hand writing on a piece of white card and glue this on the inside of the lid.
When you have finished decorating, cover the lid with contact paper if you wish. When the box is complete, store your rosary beads and a medal of your favourite saint inside.
You don’t need a complicated design for the rosary beads box. The simpler the design, the better. Pick a few different materials for decorating and get creative with your design. Instead of a Communion chalice, arrange small buttons or beads into the shape of rosary beads and glue these to the lid; arrange small beaded jewels in the shape of a cross; or create a dove out of some soft material and use a paper tea doily to fashion the wings.
