Coptic Pope cancels anniversary celebrations

Security concerns force move

Egypt – The Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Tawadros II has cancelled planned celebrations set to mark the first anniversary of his inauguration. It is reported that security concerns in the face of ongoing attacks against the Christian community in Egypt by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi prompted the decision to avoid a large-scale celebration.

It is expected the Patriarch will instead recite prayers on the day in which he will pray for peace and a more stable Egypt.
