Senior members of the Catholic Church, Parliamentarians, educators and Government officials witnessed Cardinal Vincent Nichols become St Mary’s inaugural Chancellor.

St Mary’s Vice-Chancellor Co. Down man Francis Campbell described the event as “a time to celebrate at several levels; to acknowledge great debts to those who have gone before us and to imagine a successful and vibrant St Mary’s of the future, proudly taking her place alongside some of our finest universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland and within the global community of great Catholic seats of learning across the world”.

St Mary’s is the largest Catholic University in Britain. Founded in 1850, it celebrates its 165th anniversary this year..
