Bible passages can support both sides of deacon argument

Dear Editor, In Kieron Wood’s letter (IC 28/04/2016), he plucks a line from the Bible (Timothy 2.12) to support his argument against women deacons. St Paul, a great orator of his time can only (I think) be read in context with the times, customs and practices he lived in and also the unfortunate standing/treatment of females and homosexuals at that time. It cannot be considered a literal instruction to us 2,000 years later on how to behave.

To exemplify this, a preceding verse (2.9) quotes: “Let women dress with simplicity and modesty, not adorned with fancy hairstyles, gold jewellery or expensive clothing.”

This shows the absurdity of the passage in the light of our modern thinking and perceptions. Literal enforcement can only lead to discrimination and radicalism.

I would direct Mr Wood to Acts 2.17, Peter quotes from Joel: “I will pour out my spirit to every mortal, your sons and daughters will speak through the Holy Spirit.”

Clearly as evidenced throughout Christian history the Holy Spirit has been poured out (in spades) to our sisters and daughters and that work still continues.

The argument for women deacons is obviously justified and urgent.

Yours etc.,
