Activities to fill the summer days

Start planning how you’ll spend the summer months

The summer holidays are nearly here and while they canít come sooner, you can start planning how you'll spend the next two months and ensure it's the best summer ever.

Everyone has their own favourite things to do in the summer holidays. With no school to get up early for and no homework to spend the evenings working on, you can enjoy later nights and longer sleep ins. Whatever way you spend the summer, here are five things to do before going back to school.

Stay outdoors as much as possible. The absence of homework makes the idea of staying indoors watching your favourite TV shows ever so tempting but exercise is important and you need your vitamin D. So play outside with your siblings and friends whether it's a sport or a game, and no matter what your age, no-one can resist a good game of hide and seek.

Have a picnic. You haven't experienced summer unless you've had a picnic, even if that's just sitting on the lawn eating an egg sandwich and sipping on a glass of lemonade. The best thing about picnics is the opportunity to explore somewhere new. Pack a feast together as a family and go out somewhere for the day. A picnic is no picnic without a surprise snack, so if a long drive in the car doesnít appeal to you then just look forward to a cupcake or a bag of jelly babies.

Have a family barbecue. You haven't experienced summer unless you've had char grilled sausages and toasted marshmallows on skewers.

Sadly it does rain in the summer putting a dampener on outdoor activity plans. On those wet and miserable days, try indoor camping. Build a fort in your bedroom or the living room, string up some fairy lights and raid the kitchen cupboards for some camp time snacks. As for telling scary stories in the dark, all you need is a big torch for the narrator and a cushion each to hide behind.

Read. If you're tired from indoor camping, picnicking and barbecuing then settle down with an ice cold drink and a good book. The best thing about no school is that you can read all day. Make the most of this because as you grow up it wonít be as easy to find the time to get lost in a good book. A week of reading may even inspire you to write your own short stories.
