After preparing for the permanent diaconate for the past number of years, Paul Ryan of Co. Clare was ordained as a permanent deacon to serve the people of the Diocese of Cork and Ross on Sunday, June 21 at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Timoleague.
The new deacon was ordained by Bishop Fintan Gavin, and other permanent deacons were also present to minister.
Speaking directly to Deacon Ryan during the ordination, Bishop Gavin spoke about what has shaped his vocation as a longtime parishioner of Timoleague Parish. The new deacon prepared for his role through formation and pastoral experience in Kinsale Parish.
“Your vocation has been shaped over many years,” said the bishop. “By your parents, your early life and care…by this parish community here in Timoleague, by the people who have encouraged you, and by the many experiences of faith, service and prayer that have brought you to this day. Today the Church recognises that journey, and sends you forth on mission.”
“You’re not here because you have every answer, or you rely solely on your own ability. You are here because God has called you,” concluded Bishop Gavin.
