More than 300 people from parishes across the Diocese of Cork and Ross gathered in the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne for a Songs of Praise celebration highlighting the role of music in prayer and worship.

Choir directors, musicians, cantors and singers joined members of the wider faith community for an afternoon of communal singing, reflection and shared learning. Music was led by John Casey and the Cathedral Choir, alongside Honor O Brien and the Kinsale Choir, Ursula Mulvihill and the Ballinora Choir, and Mary O’Brien with St Columba’s Choir, Douglas.

MC Susan Ormond reflected on music as a way of sharing faith, while Anna Smith spoke about how attending the Jubilee of Youth in Rome last summer deepened her faith and inspired her involvement in music ministry at the Sts Peter and Paul’s Young Adult Mass.

Bishop Fintan Gavin said the event responded to feedback from the Year of Prayer, Listening and Discernment, which highlighted a strong desire for good liturgical music.
