Women ‘rethink’ economy and the climate crisis at QUB

Dr Lorna Gold, of the Laudato Si’ Movement, spoke yesterday on “alternatives to today’s economic system in response to the climate crisis”, at the Women, Faith & Climate Network Gathering at Queen’s University Belfast.

The talk, titled ‘An economy of enough: rethinking prosperity in an age of limits’, was part of an event organised by the Join the Dots Coalition to mark Earth Day 2026. Speaking to The Irish Catholic ahead of the event, Dr Gold said she was “particularly delighted to be speaking on the topic” and that the topic is “deeply connected to my work on Laudato Si’.”

For her, “we cannot care for our common home unless we re-design our economic systems to take into account the need to move back within our planetary limits. Doing this means really shifting away from the mindset that says ‘more is better’ to asking what it means to live well with ‘enough’.”

At the end of her talk, she reminded the audience: “The Earth has limits. Our systems are exceeding them. And deep down—we already know what ‘enough’ feels like.”
