Vatican trafficking conference

International delegates travel to Rome

The Vatican has hosted a two-day conference on the issue of human trafficking.

Organised by the Bishops Conference of England and Wales, the conference, Combating Human Trafficking: Church and Law Enforcement in Partnership, drew law enforcement representatives from around the world for discussions and presentations on best approaches towards eradicating trafficking. Delegates were afforded the opportunity to hear directly from victims of trafficking. The event was led by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and concluded with an address by Pope Francis.

According to a Vatican statement on the conference, the event was designed to build on the recent meeting between the Pontiff and US President Barack Obama who “expressed their common commitment to the eradication of human trafficking throughout the world”.
