Vatican pays tribute to David Bowie

A senior Vatican official has paid tribute to rock legend David Bowie who has died this week at the age of 69 from cancer.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, tweeted lyrics from the singer’s 1969 hit Space Oddity.

The British rocker has previously spoken about the importance of spirituality in his song writing, noting that he was “not quite an atheist” and part of him was holding on to his beliefs.

“Questioning my spiritual life has always been germane to what I was writing. Always,” the singer told beliefnet in a 2003 interview. “It’s because I’m not quite an atheist and it worries me. There’s that little bit that holds on,” he said.
