University to examine Springsteen’s ‘faith songs’

An American university has announced plans to offer a course of study focused on the theological references in the songs of rock singer Bruce Springsteen.

Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is now taking applications for the course which aims to examine all of the major works of the artist, most famed for his Born in the USA track and known to his devoted fans as ‘the Boss’. The scholar leading the new course, Professor Azzan Yadin-Israel, has pointed out that Springsteen’s works are filled with examples of what he called “the sanctity of the everyday”, where the singer works to make “transcendent” elements relevant to the lived world of his fans. “In his later albums he also writes very openly about faith,” Professor Yadin-Israel said.
