SVP stalwart receives papal honour

John Costelloe, Tulla Rd, Ennis has been awarded a Bene Merenti award after over 55 years of involvement with the St Vincent de Paul society in Clare.

The Ballygriffey native, who has worked for Clare County Council and in Shannon Development, has been involved at all levels of the society, serving as conference president and area president as well as an active member.

He played a key role in reorganising the society in the area, helping boost membership numbers, as well as developing and opening Ennis’s hostel and its facilities for homeless men, and being part of the group that opened and ran the local St Vincent de Paul shop.

John’s family – his wife Breda and sons Vincent, Joe and Declan – and representatives of the Vincent de Paul society joined him for the presentation.
