Spanish priest and Italian laywoman arrested for leaking documents

A Spanish priest and an Italian public relations expert have been arrested by the Vatican following an investigation into the leaking of confidential documents from the Holy See.

Msgr Lucio Ángel Vallejo Balda and Francesca Chaouqui were arrested after a probe investigating the dissemination of “news and confidential documents” to the journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose Merchants in the Temple was launched yesterday (Wednesday), and Emiliano Fittipaldi, whose book Avarice is published today.

Mr Nuzzi’s previous book, His Holiness, relied on documents leaked by papal butler Paolo Gabriele.

Both Msgr Vallejo Balda and Ms Chaouqui were members of a commission Pope Francis set up in 2013 to advise on the reform of Vatican finances. Rome has described the leaks as a “serious betrayal of the trust bestowed by the Pope”.
