Religious sisters have said they remain undeterred by a bumpy start to their new vocations initiative, the Sisters Cafe.

The inaugural pop-up cafe which offered young women an opportunity to hear the faith story of religious sisters and to talk to them in an informal setting, was held in the Dominican Adult Education Centre in Blackrock last week. A number of sisters from different congregations attended to hear talks by Srs Carmel Ryan, Deirdre Twomey and Julie Buckley, however no young people attended.

Vocations Ireland Director, Margaret Cartwright said the “sisters were actually very pleased to get the chance to meet one another” and the “evening was full of joy and laughter”. She said while there was disappointment at the poor turnout of young people, “all in all I felt it was good for a first start and we are definitely going to continue with it”.

She said the Sisters Cafe will move to different locations over coming months, including shopping centres, colleges and other places frequented by young people. “We are absolutely undeterred. I definitely think there is an opening for us and there is an interest there.”
