Dear Editor, The passing of Bishop Dermot O’Mahoney recalls his influence in the birth and growth of St Ciaran’s parish in Hartstown, Dublin 15. In 1978 it was all green fields and there was not a single house in the area. The influx was all young people starting families but not going into the confessional box.
The spirit of Vatican II was in the air and Bishop Dermot advised “Liam, you have to take risks.” So evolved a celebration form of the sacrament of forgiveness. People start in a row and are welcomed personally by the priest. He says: “You are welcome. Jesus loves you. Sorry if you hurt anyone.” Then he gives the blessing of forgiveness.
The person is not obligated to say any word or confession. Even children can participate with adults and always delight to be greeted with a hand blessing.
I’m sure Bishop Dermot will find new ways of blessing us from Heaven.
Yours etc.,
Fr Liam Hickey,
Hartstown, Dublin 15
