Praying to win at sport

Dear Editor, in relation to your article on the female boxer Katie Taylor (‘Katie Taylor thanks God for world boxing title, IC 27/11/2014), are we to believe that God takes side in boxing competitions? That Christ approves the idea of girls punching the face off each other? To pray to God to win in any sport is an insult to God’s grace, since it demeans what we need for eternal life. I imagine that soccer players cross themselves lest they suffer a mishap on the pitch and not to get God on side. It was St Paul who referred to how people put in so much time trying to win at sport but very little effort to win eternal life.

Yours etc.,
