Popularity of Francis should not reflect badly on other Popes

Dear Editor, An article in The Irish Catholic (01/10/2015) titled “The optimistic conservatism of Pope Francis,” outlined the positive effect Pope Francis is having on the world.

We have been through a period of such shame in the Church that we all rejoice in his present popularity.

However, it is distressing when praise of Pope Francis descends into a criticism of previous Popes, as happened in this article and seems to occur frequently.

I have such a high regard and respect for the intelligence and integrity of the author of the article, that I thought it a pity he found it necessary to make comparisons.

A convert to Catholicism, I have known the Popes from Paul VI onwards and often think how gifted we have been in these leaders.

Yours etc.,

Mrs Judith Leonard,

Raheny, Dublin 5.
