In what has become one of the greatest online surprises, the Popeís Twitter account in Latin has surpassed all expectations drawing in over 216,000 followers.
Over centuries, the Church used Latin to communicate and spread its messages around the world. In modern times, it seems even todayís society has learned to appreciate this classical language.
The @Pontifex account in Latin has now more followers than the accounts for Arabic, Polish or German.
According to one Vatican Latin Expert, Fr Daniel Gallagher: ìItís almost a miracle. We werenít sure why it had such great success. But, from the letters weíve received, the messages and comments, itís clear that the public think that itís a very useful language today. Be it for an exchange of ideas or conversations, but more so for the fact that thereís a great culture behind this language,î he said.
