Pope Francis calls for end to the arms trade

Pope Francis’ prayer intention for June is for the elimination of the arms trade.

His intentions were made in a video message released on the Vatican’s Youtube channel at the beginning of this month.

“It is an absurd contradiction to speak of peace, to negotiate peace, and at the same time, promote or permit the arms trade,” he said.

“Is this war, or that war, really a war to solve problems or is it a commercial war for selling weapons in illegal trade and so that the merchants of death get rich?

Leaders

“Let us put an end to this situation. Let us pray all together that national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade which victimises so many innocent people.”

The video depicts what appears to be officials signing papers and shaking hands interposed with bullets and missiles being fired.

There are also real-world images of war-torn areas.
