The Pro Life Campaign has said there is nothing reassuring about Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s refusal to commit to a referendum on Ireland’s constitutional protection for the unborn if Fine Gael is re-elected to government.
PLC Deputy Chairperson Cora Sherlock said “The Taoiseach never actually said he was opposed to a referendum to dismantle the Eighth Amendment,” adding, “he simply said he would not support abolishing it without knowing what might take its place”.
It is important to remember how in 2013 Fine Gael “broke a solemn pre-election promise not to introduce abortion”, she continued, warning that Fine Gael strategists will attempt to gloss over the 2013 vote “in the hope of winning back pro-life support”.
Commenting on how Tánaiste Joan Burton has said repealing the Eighth Amendment would be in the Labour Party’s election manifesto, Ms Sherlock said “the stance of the Labour Party comes as no surprise”.
