Baroness delighted with position
The Irish Catholic columnist Baroness Nuala O’Loan has said she is “honoured” to have been appointed to the Medical Ethics Committee (MEC) of the British Medical Association (BMA).
The MEC is made up of BMA members from a wide range of specialties and experience and lay members who are experts in their field of theology, law and moral philosophy.
The committee debates ethical issues on the relationship between the medical profession, the public and the state. It also liaises with the General Medical Council (GMC) on all matters of ethics affecting medical practice.
Cutting edge
Speaking to this newspaper, Baroness O’Loan said: “It will be very interesting to be at the cutting edge of medical developments and I hope to play an appropriate and proper role in discussions that will be held.
“I hope that I can make a positive contribution in what is a new territory for me, having not much experience in the field,” she said.
