The North’s environment minister Mark Durkan MLA, has been criticised for using “offensive” and “hurtful” language in speaking about abortion in the case of unborn children with life-limiting conditions.
Speaking at a launch of a Women’s Manifesto in Derry, Minister Durkan said: “Now, to talk about the elephant in the room – or, the elephant in the womb.”
Bernadette Smyth, Director of Precious Life, said she was “horrified” at such “an offensive, hurtful, and vile comment about unborn children diagnosed with life-limiting disabilities”.
Mr Durkan has apologised for his comment, but Ms Smyth said his “disgraceful comment calls for more than an apology”. “It calls for a clarification of his views regarding abortion in the case where an unborn baby has been diagnosed with a life-limiting disability.”
