The North’s First Minister Arlene Foster has criticised the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI) over its role in the Ashers Bakery case.
Following the upholding of a discrimination finding against the McArthur family in failing to supply a cake bearing a message supportive of same-sex marriage Ms Foster said the ECNI had not “covered themselves in glory” in offering no help to the McArthurs and she added the actions of the publicly funded body throughout the row were “troubling”.
“I think they need to have a long hard look at how they work with faith communities in Northern Ireland and instead of accepting the metropolitan liberal elite definition of equality they need to look at what real equality is and look at the faith communities in Northern Ireland, and that is something they haven’t been doing.”
