Capuchin homeless Christmas collection raises €44,000

Despite raging wind and rain, the annual Christmas collection for the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin City Centre raised €44,000 last week.

“It was a horrible day. The weather was something fierce,” said Bro. Kevin Crowley. “We raised over €42,000 on the day and have received another nearly €2,000 since then from people who weren’t able to get out.

“In spite of the day being so bad, people were terrific and very good humoured. They couldn’t have been more generous with the day that it was.”

Established by Bro. Kevin in 1974, the Capuchin Day Centre provides hot food and food parcels to the homeless thanks to donations from members of the public.

Student’s sleep out for homeless

The annual Belvedere College students sleep out in aid of homeless charities is set to take place in the lead up to Christmas.

The initiative last year raised €178,000 for charities including Focus Ireland and the Peter McVerry Trust.

For three days and two nights, from Tuesday, December 22 until Christmas Eve, students past and present will pound the pavements with their collection buckets reminding people to spare a thought for those less fortunate.

The student will be based in two locations; outside the Bank of Ireland, College Green, Dublin 2 and at the GPO, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1.

BBQ restaurant ‘pig out’ for SVP

A popular Dublin barbeque restaurant is planning a ‘pig out’ on Christmas Eve in aid of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP).

Pitt Bros on South Great George’s Street is offering all-you-can-eat barbeque food to last minute shoppers in Dublin’s city centre with the proceeds going to the SVP.

There is a €15 entry fee to the ‘pig out’ which takes place from 11am-3pm on December 24.
