New initiative appeals for prayers for referendum

Members of various prayer groups and parishes have come together to form a new initiative asking for committed Catholics to pray that Ireland “will uphold the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman in the upcoming referendum”.

Working from an office provided by Portlaoise parish in Co. Laois the six project members are contacting prayer groups across Ireland and abroad to “join with us in this petition of prayer from now until the end of May” making it part of “your daily prayer life over the coming weeks”.

Organisers say they are not a political group and are not trying to persuade people in how to vote in the referendum, but are asking Catholics who have already made up their minds on the same-sex marriage debate to get involved. “God willing, if we succeed in getting many to join us in praying for Ireland, we believe all our prayers will be heard and the sanctity of marriage will be protected,” they said.
