Dear Editor, Now that Catholicism and all that it stands for has been ‘panned’ in this island, we are being treated to a feast of gushing words from those same clergy who stayed dumb as the ‘yes’ campaign steamrolled on. How many Masses or ceremonies were held prior to the referendum to support the ‘no’ campaign? How many ‘Catholic’ leaders voted against the ‘no’ campaign? Some priests, incredibly, announced their intention of voting ‘yes’.
Not surprisingly, the urgency is now to move on. Unlike the Government we don’t have an opposition to call for explanations, so we go on with the status quo, God help us. To quote Fr Paul Philibert we might enter “a new age of hope, discovery, joy and fulfilment leading to” worryingly “new challenges”.
Yours etc.,
Cecil Roberts,
Rathmines,
