Mexico arrests after seminarian murder

Archbishop calls for end to violence

Police in Mexico have arrested two men (pictured) in connection with the murder during Holy Week of a young seminarian. Samuel Gustavo Gumez Veleta, 21, was kidnapped and murdered as he undertook pastoral work in the town of Aldama. His body was found on April 15, the day after he disappeared. During his funeral, Archbishop Constancio Miranda Weckmann issued an appeal: “To all the Catholics of Chihuahua I ask you to work together to put an end to this violence and disregard for life which creates more and more insecurity, fear, leaving us defenceless.”

Police have now detained two men in connection with the murder, and paraded them on television ahead of their court appearance.
