Mexican prelate urges action on drug violence

Mexico – In the midst of a major outbreak of violence between drug cartels and vigilante groups in the southern region of Tierra Caliente, Archbishop Alberto Suárez Inda of Morelia has urged citizens to “take shelter” and called on the authorities to intervene urgently.

“I believe that little by little the authorities will truly seek a solution,” the archbishop said in a message to terrified citizens.

Violence was sparked when the Cavalieri Templari cartel moved to counter the growth of local self-defence groups that have sprung up among local communities despairing at efforts by police and army to counter the scourge of criminality in Mexico. Open battles were fought for five successive days last week, prompting the archbishop Inda’s words. Numerous innocent bystanders have been caught in crossfires.
