A Co. Meath couple who met Pope Francis following their wedding ceremony in Rome have said the experience “brought a blessing on the marriage”.

Piaras Delany, from Dunshauglin and his wife Sinead from Navan, got married in April in the Irish College in Rome in a small family ceremony celebrated by Piaras’ uncle, Fr Sean Smith a Kiltegan Father working in Brazil, and Dunshaughlin parish priest, Fr Joe Clavin.

Two days after the wedding the couple attended a papal audience and stood in line with other recently married couples. “Pope Francis blessed the rings, gave both of us a hug, congratulated us and asked us to pray for him,” Piaras told The Irish Catholic. “It was an amazing experience to meet him and it took me several hours to come down from the high.”

Piaras described the Pope as “very warm and giving with his time”. “It was just a very special feeling meeting him. It has brought a blessing on the marriage and a great benefit to us,” he said.
