It’s the little things that make a big difference

Adding detail is one of my favourite things about decorating a room. I love how a few simple ornaments and soft furnishings can make such a difference. In fact, it’s a great way to add colour to your room if you’re not quite bold enough to have peacock blue walls!

It’s easy to pick up bits and pieces these days with just about every department store offering top quality homeware.

Textiles like rugs, lampshades, bedding and cushions can add some drama and fun to your room.

Simplicity with a dramatic edge is a great way to revamp a tired room. For example, hanging a dramatic and colourful painting on a neutral wall.

You can even pick up on the colours in the fabrics you use with picture frames and vases.

These are elements that can be changed very easily if you’re feeling a new vibe.

Try making old things new if you can. Don’t throw away small objects you think might not work in your new room as it could be as easy as changing a frame or sprucing it up. Remember, everything can have its place.

Tired looking lamps could be spray-painted or simply switch the shade for a different shape or colour.

A lick of paint might even do the trick if your kitchen cabinets or bedroom wardrobes need a new face lift.

Chalk paint is a little gem as it can paint directly onto just about any wood. It’s a cheaper alternative to shelling out for new storage!

When it comes to prints and pillows, don’t hold back. You may look at them in the shop and think they might look out of place but majority of the time they work well. Trust your instincts. You might make mistakes and change your mind, but that’s part of the fun when transforming a room!

To create an elegant look, use a nice coffee table or a stand as a home for books, candles or lights.

Fresh flowers

Fresh flowers and potted plants can add so much colour and beauty to a room. They’re calming and instantly make a difference.

Fireplaces can be easily decorated too. Mount a mirror or make it a home for all your treasured pictures.

Large rooms can sometimes feel empty no matter how you fill them, that’s when painting and papering comes in. Bold colours will bring that wall in closer, like a trick of the eye, so be aware of that when choosing!

Remember, when it comes to the details, paying attention to the smaller things is important. Don’t forget to let the little things stand out!
