Honorary awards for religious

A number of members of religious orders are due to receive awards this week to honour their work in charity, overseas development and social activism.

This weekend Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Christy Burke, will confer the Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin on Bro. Kevin Crowley of the Capuchin Day Centre, which offers free meals to the homeless of the city.

Fr Pat Murphy, a member of St Patrick’s Missionary Society in Kiltegan from Co. Kerry, is to receive the ‘Best of South West’ award in Cahersiveen on Saturday, for his work in Nigeria, which included ministering to prisoners on death row in a maximum security prison.

Meanwhile, Dr Margaret MacCurtain OP is being awarded an honorary degree by Dublin City University today (Thursday) in recognition of her work as an academic, campaigner and advocate.
