Former nuncio to Dominican Republic is laicised

Former prelate still wanted for questioning

The Vatican has laicised its former nuncio to the Dominican Republic.

Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski  had been removed from the Dominican Republic in August as authorities there began an investigation into allegations that the prelate had paid minors for sex and that a Polish priest had abused children.

The case garnered much media attention as the Dominican Republic called for the archbishop to be returned to face questioning, while the prelateís native Poland sought clarification on the matter concerning one of its citizens.

Wesolowski has been resident in Rome since and on June 27, in a brief statement, the Vatican announced that “the first stage in the canonical trial against the former Apostolic Nuncio in the Dominican Republic, Josef Wesolowski, has been concluded with the laicisation of the prelate; the penal trial before the Vatican judicial authorities will continue as soon as the canonical sentence has been made definitive”.
