First Catholic canon for Belfast’s Protestant cathedral

Belfast’s Church of Ireland cathedral has appointed its first ever Catholic Ecumenical Canon.

Fr Edward O’Donnell, Parish Priest of St Brigid’s, Belfast, will be the first Catholic priest to serve on the Cathedral Chapter of St Anne’ Cathedral.

He will join the Methodist and Presbyterian canons, both of whom are named Ruth Patterson, in working to build inter-church relationships in Belfast.

“While this is a personal privilege for me, the honour is shared with all those who work quietly but persistently to improve and strengthen inter-church relationships,” he said.

He will be formally installed in his new role on Sunday September 25.
